ISBN stands for International Standard Book Number. This is a unique numerical identifier for commercial books. Each 13-digit International Standard Book Number consists of five parts:

Parts are separated by spaces or hyphens. Only check numbers have a fixed number of digits. A check number is a kind of redundant check for detecting errors.
